Luca Moretti

Luca Moretti is Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the Department of Humanities of the University of Eastern Piedmont, member of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, the Research Group From Perception to Belief and Back Again of the University of Bochum (Germany), and the steering committee of the Doctoral Programme of FINO (North-Western Italian Philosophy Consortium).

He graduated with an MLitt in Logic & Metaphysics from St Andrews in 1998 and with a PhD in Philosophy from King’s College London in 2003. After his PhD, he had teaching positions at University College London and King’s College London. He also did research in formal epistemology at the Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz (Germany) and research in metaphysics and philosophical logic at the Centre for Time of the University of Sydney. His first Lectureship was at La Trobe University (Melbourne) in 2009. In the same year, he left for the University of Aberdeen (UK), where he became a Reader in Philosophy in 2015. He moved to the University of Eastern Piedmont with a Full Professorship in Logic and Philosophy of Science in June 2024.

His areas of investigation are social ontology, philosophy of education and epistemology. In social ontology, he is currently working with Sandro Guli (University of Palermo) on a new conception of social role normativity that draws on both the work of contemporary social ontologists (such as John Searle and Charlotte Witt) and an interpretation of Hegel’s views on the normative structure of society. In philosophy of education, he has recently co-authored a monograph, together with Alessia Marabini (Bacon Foundation), in which they defend a model of Bildung-oriented education, which draws on both critical theory and hermeneutics, and argue that it is in many ways superior to current models of competence-based education. In epistemology, he has recently published a monograph, co-authored by Kevin McCain (University of Alabama), in which they defend a new conception of epistemic justification, called “phenomenal explanationism”, which combines phenomenal conservatism (a form of foundationalism that holds that justification comes from appearances) and explanationism (which holds that hypotheses that explain evidence are justified by it).
