Workshop international de l’IRP RPRCCT (Université Paris 1 – Université de Bonn – Université de Turin -CNRS). “Why Does Truth Matter?”
Paris, 15-16 Juin
How important is truth, from a realistic point of view? This question will be addressed in its metaphysical, epistemic, aesthetic, ethical, political and societal dimensions questioning or relativization. Or, when it comes under the guise of epistemic realism, it is a matter of affirming the accessibility of this truth in principle. However, it is not self-evident that realism is merely about truth, or even about the mere existence of what there are certain truths about. The traditional conception of realism, beyond truth, affirms reality. The question should be considered whether such a distinction makes sense and, if so, what sense(s). If there are reasons to distinguish truth and reality, we should ask what role(s) truth can play in reality, and in particular in our lives. To what extent do we need truth to face reality? AndIn the contemporary philosophical debate, realism is, as a rule, primarily understood as the defense of truth against any postmodern
