The Sensible (Re)Turn
Scienza Nuova Institute
April 14, 2026
For a long time, sensibility has been largely overlooked in philosophical inquiry, often eclipsed by an emphasis on abstraction, formal reasoning, and linguistic capacities. In recent years, however, the sensible has re-emerged as a central philosophical concern. Sensibility (understood in terms of embodiment, perception, affectivity, and the gaze) appears today as a defining dimension of natural intelligence, one that resists full formalization and distinguishes human cognition from artificial forms of intelligence. This renewed attention is especially significant in the context of rapid technological development, where artificial systems increasingly replicate cognitive functions while remaining detached from lived, bodily experience. The conference aims to explore the philosophical implications of this (re)turn to the sensible, investigating its role in understanding human intelligence, its limits of artificial replication, and its significance for contemporary debates at the intersection of philosophy, technology, and human experience.
