Mattia Gallotti, We-Intentionality: A Sellarsian Approach
Social structures have their conditions of existence and identity fixed in virtue of being shared. Think of legal systems and eco-chambers, political imaginaries and visual cultures: they are shared when part of what makes them the things they are is precisely that they are shared. As Charles Taylor (1984) once remarked, shared structures are significant not qua mine, but qua ours. When people achieve knowledge of shared things, they think thoughts whose linguistic expression makes salient the use of the first-person plural pronoun, ‘we’. In this talk, I draw on a range of sources and uses of the first plural perspective to articulate a Sellarsian approach to we-intentionality.
