Few social research methods are adapted to the way architects work. Ethnography is one of them. The use of ethnographic methods in architecture holds remarkable potential to investigate new research and design questions. The course will introduce the students into ethnography as an approach that pays specific attention to the texture of ordinary life of designers; it scrutinizes design and urban practices as involving actors with variable ontology, scale and politics, and generates ‘thick descriptions’ of the knowledge practices of different participants in city making.
