Olivier Sartenaer
Olivier Sartenaer graduated in both physics (2006) and philosophy (2009). After defending his Ph.D dissertation in philosophy of science at the Université catholique de Louvain in 2013, he pursued his research on emergence as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University (Fulbright, 2013-2014), the Université catholique de Louvain (FNRS, 2014-2017) and, currently, the University of Cologne (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 2017-…). He was also a visiting fellow at the University of Cambridge (2011), Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University (2013) and the University of Virginia (2016). His main research topic is the emergence/reduction debate as it plays out in the natural sciences. Together with Alexandre Guay and Paul Humphreys, he recently promoted a new theory of emergence called “transformational emergence”.
