Abstract: No values figure as pervasively and intimately in
our lives as beauty and other aesthetic values. They animate
the arts, as well as design, fashion, food, and entertainment.
They orient us upon the natural world. And we even find them
in the deepest insights of science and mathematics. For
centuries, however, philosophers and other thinkers have
identified beauty with what brings pleasure. Concerned that
aesthetic hedonism has led us to question beauty’s
significance, Dominic McIver Lopes offers an entirely new
theory of beauty. Beauty engages us in action, in concert with
others, in the context of social networks. This talk sketches
the main argument in favour of the network theory of
Dominic McIver Lopes FRSC is Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. His research focusses on pictorial representation; the aesthetic and epistemic value of pictures, including scientific images; theories of art and its value; the ontology of art; computer art and new art forms; and aesthetic value, wherever it may be found. His most recent books are a collection of his essays on methodological themes, Aesthetics on the Edge: Where Philosophy Meets the Human Sciences, and a book on Being for Beauty: Aesthetic Agency andValue. A set of papers discussing his work is due for publication in December as Les Arts et les images: Dialogues avec Dominic McIver Lopes. Many of his books have been or are being translated into Chinese, Farsi, French, Japanese, and Korean. Lopes is now at work on a book on Cosmopolitan Aesthetics.
